In conjunction with the Sultana’s Downrigging Festival scheduled for October 29-31, 2021, in Chestertown, Maryland, the Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College will be hosting a War of 1812 interpretive encampment on the rear lawn of the 18th Century Chestertown Customs House at the foot of High Street. The historical educational program will be based on Kent County’s citizens and soldiers of the 21st Regiment of Maryland Militia which defended Chestertown and Kent County during the conflict with Great Britain between 1812 to 1815. Early 19th Century citizens and those who served in the militia will be portrayed by historical interpreters from across the Mid-Atlantic Region, and the daily activities of a military encampment will be demonstrated. An early 19th public memorial ceremony will also be held at the Caulk’s Field Monument on Sunday morning in remembrance those who participated in the Battle of Caulk’s Field during the night of August 30-31, 1814.
